The Classic Club started from idle talk in the pub - always a dangerous thing! As you would expect in an agricultural area like Cwmdu, there are many people interested in old farm machinery, and in old or classic machines generally. The club is very informal: no membership fees or programme, but on the second Thursday in each month the Cwmdu Inn is filled with people come to listen to a talk, watch a video or enjoy a demonstration on a relevant topic. So far there have been videos on motor cycles, land rovers, farming in the Second World War and ploughing. Eddie Thomas and John Hodges have demonstrated wood turning and radiator manufacturing. There was a very enjoyable "start and park" evening, when items as far apart as a 1950's tricycle and an MG with a V8 engine were displayed in the pub car park.

The most ambitious event so far was the Commemorative Ploughing Match held in May 2000. On the walls of the Cwmdu Inn there are copies of posters advertising ploughing matches from the 1800s, and one from 1900.More idle talk led to the idea of having another ploughing match to mark the millennium. So after much preparation and hesitation, eight tractors competed for two trophies (one for trailed ploughs, one for hydraulic) at Ffoslas on May 8th. The weather was glorious and the turnout of more than 200 beyond all expectations. The horse ploughing demonstration given by Jim Reynolds kept many visitors entranced for hours. The match was generously supported by local firms and individuals and the trophies were made by Eddie Thomas, as were the competitor's plaques - from oak from Ffoslas. Brenyg Bryan and his friends from Pembrokeshire very kindly leant their time and experience to advise the novice local entrants, and Lodwig Jones gave up valuable silageing weather to judge the event. The money raised has been donated to the Welsh Air Ambulance Service.

For the past three years tractor road runs have been organized and participants have had the pleasure of seeing different parts of the area from the tractor seat (or landrover seat in some cases) and enjoyed a meal at different local pubs.

The Classic Club meets at the Cwmdu Inn on the second Thursday of each month. For more information, contact Edwin Arblaster at
