On 7th September 2002, members of Cymdeithas
Cwmdu and Cwmdu Classic Club gathered at the village pub for the grand
opening of the new footbridge between the pub garden and the cricket
field. The bridge, constructed of steel and timber on stone piers, was
the work of local men Edwin Arblaster, Humphrey Edwards and Pete Bond,
with the plans translated from drawings 'on the back of an envelope' by
Ian Russel. The concreting of the piers and final fixing of the timber
was completed by members of the Cymdeithas and the Cricket Club.
The idea for a bridge to ease access from the pub
to the field had been discussed the previous year; money was raised by a
'49 Club' at the pub, and other fundraising events and raffles. But it
was a generous grant from the Principality Building Society which
allowed it to become reality. Footings were prepared in May, with the
hope that the bridge would be ready for the day of the village fete, but
the weather did not co-operate; heavy rain raised the level of the river
and work was delayed for over a month. In the meantime, the bridge
itself was put together in a barn, then dismantled for the drilled metal
components to be galvanized and the wood to be tantalized. At the end of
August, the sub structure was slid into position (with the help of a
tractor, two planks of wood and some steel tubing) and the bridge was
completed ready for an outdoor film show on August 31st |

. Cymdeithas Cwmdu and the Cwmdu
Classic Club had each held charity fund
raising events during the summer, and after the bridge was officially
opened by the manager of the
Principality Building Society in Llandeilo,
cheques were given to representatives of the Dinefwr Riding
for the
Disabled Group, Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, Noahs Ark Appeal, the
Community Nurse Fund and the Kevin Blakeman
Trust. Tea was provided by members of
Cymdeithas Cwmdu, and although wasps decided to make their
presence felt, the afternoon was enjoyed by all.
